Welcome to Agent Beat, a daily briefing on how AI finds brands and how agents choose what to buy. Today is Friday, October 16, 2026. We start with shopping, then move through search, measurement, ads, and the web.
Google says Universal Cart is now available in the United States across Search and the Gemini app. The company says the cart can complete checkout inside the cart itself. It can also hand the purchase off to the store's own site. That gives shoppers two ways to finish a purchase: inside the cart or on the store's site. Universal Cart is available in the U.S. across Search and the Gemini app. The announcement covers both Search and the Gemini app.
On the analytics side, ChatGPT-attributed traffic fell sharply in several analytics datasets this month, according to Search Engine Journal. Analysts tie the drop to ChatGPT links that open without tracking tags. The report says the drop appears to be a tracking problem. The links are opening without the tags analytics tools need to attribute the visit. That affects how ChatGPT traffic is counted in several datasets. The datasets are several, and the drop is sharp.
A separate analysis from iPullRank looks at generative search results pages. In that model, a model writes the page for each query. iPullRank argues this changes how results are presented. But iPullRank says the change does not alter how results are selected. The piece says the main break is measurement. The page being measured is no longer a stable object. The argument separates presentation from selection and points to measurement as the break. The piece focuses on how generative pages are measured.
Google also says it is updating AI Mode and AI Overviews. The updates include clearer links, context about sources, and more. Google says the change is meant to connect users with the web from search results. The updates are meant to make those connections clearer in AI search responses. The update includes links and source context.
In France, data from ACPM reported by Journal du Net shows French news sites lost nearly a quarter of their visits in the year after Google's AI summaries arrived. Their apps lost much less over the same period. The article says being cited by an AI is no longer enough. The data compares the drop in web visits with the smaller drop in app visits. The article reports on the year after the summaries arrived.
On advertising, OpenAI plans to start testing image ads in the U.S. in late October, according to Digiday Japan. The ads will appear during image generation. They will be clearly labeled. They will be shown separately from images ChatGPT generates. OpenAI is also updating its measurement features. The test is planned for the U.S. in late October. The image ads are a test, and OpenAI is updating measurement.
Back in search, Search Engine Journal reports that Google is changing how links appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews. The change moves inline links higher. It also expands the carousels that highlight Preferred Sources. The change applies to more AI search responses than before. Both inline links and Preferred Sources carousels are part of the update. The update affects link placement and Preferred Sources carousels.
For brands, OMR surveyed practitioners on how brands become visible in ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI assistants. The survey covers crawler checks to measurement. It also covers which tactics no longer work. The survey looks at how GEO works and how brands win in AI answers. The survey covers crawler checks and measurement.
In another link update, Search Engine Roundtable reports Google changed how it shows links and carousel link cards in AI Mode and AI Overviews again. Google says the changes are meant to drive clicks from AI answers to publishers. Google still does not publish click data for those links. The update changes both links and carousel link cards. Google says the changes are meant to drive clicks, but click data is not published.
A different measurement problem comes from Abondance. Rank tracker Nozzle found that 8 percent of search results pages collected since September 13, 2026 were poisoned. That is up from 0.17 percent between August 20 and September 9. On those pages, organic results kept only 21 percent of the usual sites for the query. The results favored sites like Reddit, Facebook and LinkedIn. Nozzle is a rank tracker, and Abondance reported the finding. The poisoned pages were 8 percent of those collected since September 13, 2026.
In AI Mode, SEO Südwest reports Google presented several changes. Those changes include showing more inline links. This is one of the changes Google presented for AI Mode. SEO Südwest reports the change is about more inline links.
Finally, on tracking, SEO Südwest reports ChatGPT is passing UTM tracking parameters again. The interruption was a bug. Tracking traffic from ChatGPT had become harder while the parameters were missing. The parameters are passing again now. The bug interrupted UTM parameters, and now they are passing again.
